I’m exhausted with all of the thoughts and prayers thrown at the wall as we watch gun violence continue to escalate in our country.
If you want to believe in god, fine. Just stop acting like he/she/it is going to do something about this cycle of violence.
And I don’t care what people’s arguments are for their right to carry. People have a right to live. In safety.
Especially little kids.
This is not new. It’s not surprising. But if it’s still not shocking, then we are beyond broken as a people.
I watched 2 pastors express their views after the most recent mass shooting in Tulsa. It made me sick. They were proselytizing hours after people were murdered.
People - gunned down in cold blood with impunity.
Shooting the killer or stopping them and then locking them up, isn’t going to fix this problem. That’s a band aid on a bleeding artery.
And prayer - ultimately it is a self calming mechanism. If it helps you, then great. But beyond that, there is no evidence or measurable way to say that it has any influence on societies problems at all. If you think it does, then you might want to look at how many people were witnessed praying right before they were murdered by a gun.
Most mass shootings have eyewitness stories of people praying, then dying. And it would seem since we have so many instances of thoughts and prayers following these events, that we have a large enough sample size to see how useless those thoughts and prayers are for fixing this problem
There seems to be a stock response from zombie religious people who just blame “wickedness” and our collective “need for a savior” whenever something really bad happens.
Fuck that shit.
We need legislation. WE have the power to act. To stop this cycle.
We are not helpless. We are not incapable.
We lack unity.
And how can that be? How are we not united together as a people of one country to create an environment of safety for each other?
American independence has done a lot of damage over the centuries. And the constitution is wielded like a weapon to protect and defend in both good and bad ways. Context and interpretation matter.
But in this context, the extreme interpretation of our liberty as it relates to guns is preventing us from making good decisions that could save lives.
VOTE for people who want to reform gun laws. Common sense.
It is not unconstitutional to save fellow citizens from these terrifying acts of violence.
How many people have to die in these horrific tragedies before we do something? How many more kids have to be slaughtered?
That’s what is happening. This isn’t a wave the flag and clutch your constitution time.
It is a time for shame, grief and mourning. Our rights as Americans never meant, doing whatever the fuck we want. That isn’t freedom or liberty. It’s selfishness.
ENOUGH.
Every human in in this country is vulnerable to this unchecked madness. It is evil. It IS indeed wicked. But isn’t it also just as evil to be apathetic and DO nothing?
We don’t need a god to save us. We need to save ourselves.
WE can do that. It is in our power to act. We need to put peaceful but persistent pressure on those in power to act and make a significant change.
